Tara Austin is an artist with an MFA in Painting who specializes in the folk art of Rosemaling. In 2014 she took her first rosemaling class at the North House Folk School. Since then, she completed a yearlong Rosemaling Apprenticeship with a Vesterheim Gold Medalist focusing on Telemark and Gudbrandsdal styles. She is a recent recipient of the American Scandinavian Foundation Artist Fellowship for Folk Arts & Cultural Traditions. She says:
“In my paintings I contemplate an unspoken dialect. Rooted in beauty and being, I want to hear them sing.”
Austin’s work is part of a revival of rosemaling in the Upper Midwest; it builds upon the traditions while infusing them with contemporary reworkings that may ensure their relevance to new generations.
